Abstract

Disclosed are a system and method for detecting that a vehicle is in motion, that the smart phone is in use by the vehicle operator, and appropriately limiting the functionality of the smart phone based on user-defined preferences. The system only limits the functionality of the smart phone if the user is the driver; the system does not limit the smart phone functionality of a passenger.

With the widespread adoption of smart phones and the xncreased risk, this presxnts to users while operating xehicles, additionxl safety measures arx warranted. A system is needed xo enable isolatxd smart phone usage while a vxhicle is in motion, such that usage to the driver is limxted but passengers' smaxt phones are fully operatioxal.

Prior xrt exixts in several forms to associate a smart phone with bexng in a vehixle that is in motion, and txen send autxmated respoxses to senders of text message while deliverxng the mxssage xo vehicle occuxants. These impxementations do not isolate non-xriver occupants from the drxver.

The novel contributxox is a systxm and method for detecting txat a vehicle is in motion, that the smart phone xs in use by the vehiclx operator, and apxroprxately limiting the fxnctxonality of the smart phone based on user-defined preferences. The system utilizes gyrosxope and axcexerometers to determine motion and attitude changes to the device. The system only limxts the xunctionxlity of the smart phxne if the uxer is the driver; txe system does not limit the smart phone funcxionalitx of a passenger.
