Abstract

In 2013, BASF launched a new polymer, Luviset® One, designed to fill unmet market needs. The new Acrylates/Methacrylamide Copolymer (INCI) was engineered to provide multi-functional properties in the hair styling market. The polymer could be used as a styling polymer as well as a thickener for all types of non-aerosol styling products. In addition, the polymer can hold up to ~15% oils without need for a traditional emulsifier. This unique thickening, styling, emulsifying property in one, allowed formulators to develop traditional as well as novel textures while simplifying the process and reducing the complexity of their formula. In 2015, after several years of working with this polymer, BASF researchers hypothesized that it would work well in a leave-on, skin care type of formula. Not only would the polymer thicken with a unique rheology, but the film would adhere to the skin and immediately tighten to temporarily reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. There is a large market demand for instant wrinkle reduction from a cosmetic product, but the product has to perform well enough for the consumer to perceive its effects.

A double blind, placebo controlled and randomized clinical study (n=32) was conducted to evaluate Luviset® One for its efficacy in instant skin tightening and wrinkle reduction/skin smoothness. Sample formulations with Luviset® One at 2% and 4% (active polymer) were tested along with a Placebo (0.5% Carbomer) and a Benchmark (1.5% PVP, 0.5% Carbomer). Instrumental measurements for skin firmness/tightening parameters were taken with Cutometer and Ballistometer at baseline and after each product application. Images were also taken with Visia-CR 2D and AEVA 3D Imaging system at baseline and five minutes after each product application. Image analysis for skin roughness, fine line visibility and Crow's Feet wrinkles was conducted with AEVA software. To round out the study, a consumer perception questionnaire was answered by the panelists regarding the product benefits

After application of Luviset® One 4%, surface skin roughness (Sq and Sa parameters by AEVA) and fine line visibility (Curvature parameters by AEVA) were reduced (p<0.05), indicating that Luviset® One 4% was effective in instantly smoothing skin. Additionally, Luviset® One 4% provided significantly more skin tightening/firmness benefit than Placebo (p<0.05) with ~16% more for R0 & R3 parameter measured by Cutometer, respectively; and 3% more for CoR1 parameter measured by Ballistometer. Furthermore, subjects perceived Luviset® One 4% as producing a greater (p<0.05) tightened feel and appearance on skin than the Benchmark and the Placebo. Luviset® One 2% significantly reduced Crow's Feet wrinkle volume after product application (AEVA Image Analysis software). Moreover, Luviset® One 2% was perceived as performing as well as the Benchmark in producing a tightened fee...
