Abstract

A method and system is disclosed for detecting cognitive change of an individual by monitoring communication patterns of the individual after a cognitive event. The method and system alerts concerned parties regarding changes/variations in communication patterns of the individual with the concerned parties following the cognitive event. The changes/variations in communication patterns of the individual are detected based on level of motivation and energy in the content of conversation, aspects of the language, and various other factors.

Disclosed is a method and system for detecting cognitive change of an individual by monitoring communication patterns of the individual (such as an elderly person, a patient or a family member) after a cognitive event. The cognitive event may include a traumatic event, job change, moving, alcohol or drug or other abuse, taking a medication, hospitalization, other medical event, starting or dropping a new medication for a home medical procedure, social condition change such as family member's death , a diagnosis of cognitive disease such as depression or other disease .

The method and system alerts concerned parties (such as family members, children, caretakers, therapists, doctors and/or friends.) via messaging, regarding changes/variations in communication patterns of the individual with the concerned parties following the cognitive event. The communication patterns may include the individual sending the messages at a different time than usual , long amount of time between communications and long amount of time before submitting .

The method and system identifies a period prior to the cognitive event with context feature(s) similar to the period since the cognitive event and detects a change /variation in communication patterns of the individual with the concerned parties in prior period and the period since the cognitive event. The method and system alerts the concerned parties if the detected change/variation in communication patterns of the individual exceeds a threshold level.

The cognitive changes effect the individual in various ways and the individual may reduce/change the rate of the communications with the concerned parties . The cognitive changes also effect the individual motivation and energy , user activity (e.g., rest, waking, and sleeping), user memory and language. The method and system extracts features that predict the cognitive changes in the individual . The changes/variations in communication patterns of the individual are detected based on level of motivation and energy in the content of conversation , aspects of the language, and various other factors. If the cognitive change affects the user memory and language areas of the brain, then the individual messaging behavior is effected, since messaging involves both reading and writing. The level of motivation and energy may reduce/change the rate of the communications, sending the messages at a different time than usual, long amount of time between communications and long amount of time before submitting. The individual sending messages to the concerned parties may be reduced. The aspect of the language may include, but not limited to spelling, word choice, typos, grammar correction and long pauses between words or sentences .
