System to Automatically Build Itinerary Plans Based on Electronic Communications

When traveling or scheduling travel, users take advantage of various electronic communications (e.g., e-mail, instant messaging, social media, etc.) to determine travel details such as airfare, hotel, and rental car booking. Identifying the best dates, times, airlines, etc. to use for departure can be difficult to managed, especially when coordinating with others.

The novel contribution is a system that reads these various communications, determines travel plans, connects to a travel reservation system, and automatically builds a travel itinerary including times, prices, etc. In addition, the system can apply a user's profile to ensure that travel options are presented that match the user's preferences . Users can also edit the generated itineraries to fit specific requirements.

Based on enabling art*, the system introduces semantic searching of electronic communications to discover whether travel is needed, when it is needed, where it is needed, and where it is necessary. Additionally, using various repositories it can suggest hotels (with open dates/times), local transportation, and activities/events during the travel/stay period. In addition, the novel system extends enabling art (i.e. Google AdSense*) in that it takes the current functionality of discovering possible travel, and then connects to various repositories to suggest a full travel itinerary, rather than just nearby locations/events.

In a preferred embodiment, the system:

1. Continually reads electronic communications

2. Identifies a possible travel opportunity

3. Collects the necessary information for the event:

A. Mode of travel (e.g., train, air, rented car, etc.)

B. Departure location

C. Arrival location

D. Departure date/time

E. Arrival date/time

F. Accommodation location (e.g., near the airport)

G. Needed transportation (e.g., need to get to customer office downtown for noon meeting)

H. Needed meal locations (e.g., taking customer to meal Thursday night)
