A large display television (TV) can offer consumers a more enjoyable TV watching experience. The fixed size of the large display TV, however, has several drawbacks. The large display consumes a high amount of power, and the TV is either on or off; it is an all-or-nothing situation. Large TVs offer no flexibility to accommodate the size of the room, the setting, position in the room, other furnishings, number of viewers (i.e. large screen for a full room, small screen for a single or few viewers) or content (i.e. user might want to view some content on a smaller screen). The large TV is difficult to move due to bulk and weight, even if it is on a rolling cart.

Traditional TVs have fixed frame size. To offer some options, traditional TVs with a fixed frame size can have a split-screen or picture-in-picture option, but this does not address the problems noted above. Projector-type screens provide the ability to adjust screen size and are another type of implementation. Projectors require a screen or flat surface on which to project the images, which might not always be available.

A method and system are needed by which a user can dynamically change the TV display area based on content analysis or other environmental factors.

Flexible display devices have improved greatly in technology and adoption. The proposed solution leverages the capability of flexible displays within the television and expands upon it with a rollout/roll-in function to change the screen size.

The novel contribution is a method and system for an expandable rollup flexible TV display with optimal viewing size. The system automatically makes changes to the display based on the size of the room, number of people watching TV, direct control by user preference, or content analysis. Size mapping is followed based on predetermined user preferences or the recommendations of social media users.

The system comprises a camera or other sensor to determine the number of people watching and associated viewing angle(s). A camera and software determine the size of the room. The software also identifies the content type to determine size mapping by either user preference or recommendation by social media users. The software recommends the TV display dimension from the defined criteria and initiates a changes in the display, such as rolling in or out from the structure of the TV to accordingly increase or decrease the screen size. The user can directly control the settings, as well.

 Mechanism to unroll/roll screen (e.g., hydraulic, pneumatic, or any other method by which the collapsible structure can collapse or expand)
