There is a number of the mobile device unlock and authentication mechanism currently in use. The most popular ones include: password, pin, pattern drawing or fingerprint scan. However trying to unlock the mobile device using just one hand , while being in move (ie. while walking or jogging), requires certain degree of dexterity in the user 's palm. In general it is not an easy task and very often requires to cease all other activities (ie. walking) or using both hands for the moment of interacting with the device because it requires precise and accurate tapping certain areas on the touch screen . This innovation partially solves this problem by minimizing the screen tapping (just one tap) or sliding (no sliding) activity while retaining security.

A portable mobile device with a touch screen may be unlocked by touching a ceratin area of the screen and hold it for a predefined time period . The device is unlocked if selected portion of the screen is the same as a predefined area of the screen and a user maintains a contact with the screen for the predefined time period . In order for the device to transition from the lock state to unlock state , the contact with the screen must be ceased after the predefined had elapsed . Authentication is based on area touched and time period it has to held. Number of total combinations available is a function of number of possible areas and time the selected area is being touched . This method can be implemented on any device with the touch screen as it doesn 't require any special sensors as contrary to the fingerprint scan. It also minimizes the number of interactions the user has to perform with the device like multiple precise taps or slides .

A mobile device with a touch screen can transition from the lock state to unlock state if the touched portion of the screen is the same as a predefined (preselected) portion of the screen and the contact of the user 's finger/pointer remains in touch with the screen for a predefined amount of time. The contact with the screen must be ceased after the predefined time had elapsed in order to unlock a device . For example if the predefined time was 5 seconds, the screen must be released after the 5 th second had elapsed and before the 6 th second elapses. If the contact with the screen is ceased before or after these time boundaries, the condition is not met and the device remains locked .

The embodiments consist of two main components :
- selectable area of the touch screen. User selects a portion of the screen by tapping in within the boundaries of the area.
- timer showing actual elapsed time of user's being in contact with the screen
