Disclosed is a method and system for enabling driverless vehicles to optimally share unused road space to maintain traffic.

In accordance with the method and system, a server tracks each driverless vehicle for obtaining information such as direction of movement and vehicle dimension.

Based on the direction of movement of different driverless vehicles, server compares the traffic in both sides of the road. If the difference is sizeable, then the server distributes the traffic in both sides of the road in such a way that one virtual road divider can be created.

The server provides instructions to the driverless vehicles for arranging the driverless vehicles in such a way that traffic can be controlled in an optimum way by distributing the traffic in both sides of the road. Additionally, some portion of heavily loaded traffic moves to available space in other side of the road.

The Figure illustrates an exemplary scenario in which the driverless vehicles are aligned so as to maximizing the use or road space.

As illustrated, the driverless vehicles, moving in haphazard fashion on a side of less traffic, are moved to a common lane so as to create additional road space. Traffic load can be balanced. One or more driverless vehicles from one side of the road are moved to other side of the road side.
