Abstract

The well correlation module inside Petrel, which is a software that presents an end-to-end workflow, integrating Geophysics, Geology and Reservoir engineering in a single platform, always existed being one of the essential steps in the geological modeling. This tool offers to the geoscientists several components that allow the interpretation of the geology in 2D based in well logs. However, even with the changes during the years did not promote the possibility of a freedom interpretation which sometimes makes the users to search for a different application to complement what they have in mind. The approach of the Well Section Window enhancer (WSEe) will innovate the way the well correlation module works in Petrel, adding new and very useful functionalities which can boost the existing tool among the clients increasing our market. Geoscientists will be able to interpret geology the way it should be defined regardless its degree of complexity using tablets devices as their working tool. The idea is to combine the freedom of the “paper and pen” with the digital world, using the latest technology in the market. In addition, a Display formatter will be available for the user. Petrel is very well known about the way data is displayed, providing to the customer several options and appropriate formats for reports and presentations, like: Map window, Well Section Window, 2D and 3D windows, etc. However, standards for these documents required by the National Oil Agency in Brazil, as track lines, display of the header, among others, cannot be completely reproduced with the functionalities that he have today. With the Well Section Widow enhancer the user will be able to select the standards required by National Control Agencies (the Brazilian National Agency for instance, ANP) very easily, once all the format will be already defined as a template for the user. Combining this functionality with the free manipulation to interpret geological layers using a tablet as a device is something completely new in the market, which can definitely differentiate us from the competitors.

Geology makes part of our history since the beginning of scientific studies. The curiosity and great observation capacity among the scientists led for the development of several technical concepts used until these days. One important contribution that makes part of this geological trajectory comes from Nicholas Steno (1638). His work on the formation of rock layers and the fossils they contain was crucial to the development of modern geology. The principles he stated, which includes 3 basic concepts of stratigraphy (Law of superposition, Principle of original horizontality and Principle of lateral continuity), continue to be used today by geologists and paleontologists.

Based in these basic concepts, geologists started to correlate rock layers according to its characteristics. The tools for the geoscientists in the oil industry include not only outcrops...
