Abstract

The undersigned has filed the patent (WO2013132468) “Road trailer with orientable secondary wheelset” in a number of countries, and is developing a range extending service for electric vehicles as one application of this patent. The patent contains a description of the steering mechanism of the secondary wheelset, which is carrying the trailer during backing maneuvers in order to prevent it from knife jacking. This document is making public the following alternate solution regarding the orientation means of the secondary wheelset. The orientation means could consist of master and slave hydraulic (or gas) cylinders or consist of an electric actuator of the steering of the wheelset and differential distance or angle measurement between the trailer and the vehicle. Although these are well known solutions for providing the same actuation function as a cable or a link rod, this publication is made for the avoidance of doubt. One or two master cylinders are placed on one or two sides of the tow bar, one end being connected to a part which is fixed to the towing vehicle, and the other end is connected to a part which is fixed to the trailer, in such way that when the trailer rotates in relation to the towing vehicle the master cylinder is either compressed of expanded. The fluid or gas it contains moves into the corresponding chamber of slave cylinder, which will expand or retract at the same time. The slave cylinder(s) is/are mounted in such way that it/they actuates the steering of the secondary wheelset. A side benefit of that solution is that it dampens possible oscillations of the trailer in a case where the direction of the towing vehicle is itself oscillating at an exciting frequency. As a further enhancement of the hydraulic function, a hydraulic module is placed on the hydraulic lines between the master and slave cylinder. This module contains a hydraulic fluid tank which is connected to each line through valves. Excess pressure in each line is evacuated to the tank through calibrated valves. Negative pressure is compensated by letting oil enter the line through calibrated valves. The calibration of the valves is such that on each significant temperature cycle (for example day and night), some oil will flow from the large chamber of the cylinders into the small chamber. A reverse effect is arranged through the mechanical configuration of the cylinders: each time the driver makes a sharp turn, a master cylinder will fully expand. If there is too much hydraulic fluid in the small chambers of the master-slave cylinders, the slave cylinder will hit its maximum expansion before the master cylinder, and pressure will increase up to the point where excess pressure be released by the calibrated valve of the hydraulic block. As a result, the system will be permanently self-centered between the master and slave cylinders: the temperature cycle effect slowly increases oil in the small cylinder, and the sharp turn effect re-balances any excess.
