ABSTRACT

Gesture control technology allows users to interact with devices without physically touching the devices. Gesture control technology can be employed to interact with various devices in an area. However, users are required to learn different gestures for each device, with multiple devices in a room. There are chances of conflict, when similar gestures are used for different devices or when the devices are close to each other. As the number of devices allowing control by gestures increases, the number of gestures increases and it becomes impractical for the users to keep learning gestures for each device.


1. INTRODUCTION

Controlling devices using gestures is commonly used in gaming and for enabling specific functions in the devices. For example, gestures may be used to control devices like television, smartphone and the like. Gestures can be voice based, motion based, face based, hand based or model based. Generally, the hand based gestures are popular. Based on the gestures performed by user's hand, devices can be selected and specific operations/functions can be enabled.

Within a known environment, like a house or an office or an aircraft cabin, multiple devices may require to be controlled with gestures. The devices can include, but not limited to, lighting, air-conditioning, monitors, speaker, door, and the like. For each device, predefined hand gestures exist and the user needs to learn the gestures for each device. Environments with multiple devices require the users to learn multiple gestures for each of the devices. Hence, there is a need to make gesture selection and control of devices simple, efficient and accurate.

2. PROPOSED SOLUTION OF THE PROBLEM

The proposed solution provides a target orientated gesture control system which can implemented in any environment. The target orientated gesture control system predefines location of each static target (target can be any device or object to be controlled in the environment). Throughout the description the terms "target", "static target", "device" and "object" are used interchangeably. The location of the static targets in an environment is stored in a memory of the target orientated gesture control system. Using simple hand based gestures; the users can select different devices and perform multiple operations on the selected device. For example, a fingertip point gesture can be used to select a static target. Based on the user's position in the environment, and the direction of the gesture, the target orientated gesture control system computes the gesture points. The computed gesture points are compared with predefined static targets stored in the memory. Based on the match between the gesture points, the direction of the gesture and the stored predefined static target, a specific static target gets selected.
