Companies use drones to deliver product from the warehouse to the customer location. The weight of the product is within a predefined limit that the drone can carry. Future development is expected to bring high capacity drones that can carry comparatively heavy material; however, carrying heavy material has potential risk. For example, if a drone carrying a heavy material experiences a mechanical or electrical fault and begins to crash, then serious risk is posed to people and structures in the path of a free-falling heavy object.

A method and system are needed that enables a drone, while carrying any heavy

material, to dynamically identify the safest route (i.e. poses little risk to people and structures if the drone malfunctions).

The novel contribution is a method and system by which a drone dynamically detects conditions in its path that are potentially dangerous should the drone systems fail, and then uses an on-board avoidance system and software to identify a safer route and/or altitude and automatically re-route the drone.

The drone is equipped with a thermal imaging system and image analysis software. This enables the drone, during flight, to identify living beings, objects, structures, bodies of water, etc. that are in the flight path. Based on the identified elements (e.g., people, buildings, lakes, etc.) in the flight path, the specifications of the carried load, and the altitude of the drone, the system can identify a route that circumvents potential danger. If the identified object is mobile, then the system can predict the direction of movement and proactively change route or reduce flying altitude. The drone can also appropriately reduce altitude to save energy. Further, the system takes into account

weather conditions when selecting the best route.
