Abstract

A method is proposed to identify the TV viewers presence, Analyse their previous viewing history and based on the analytics, dynamically modify the functionality of remote controller. The analytics algorithm also takes into account the presence of child and hence decide to block the channel and shift to next preferred channel.

Radio and TV have become major source of entertainment for people across globe. The channels and programs aired are also diverse, yet specialized in a particular genre. One of the main reason for the specialization is to target a specific set of viewers. In other words, it reflects the 'customization and personalization' need of people. This need is a common phenomenon in the world of technology, especially in the IT field. In fact a good/great product will have the ability to dynamically learn from the user behavior and customize / personalize based on lesson learned. In addition to this capability, ease of usage/controllability makes a product more appealing, especially in IoT (Internet of Things) domain.

To bring this intuitive capabilities, the micro-location based technologies like BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy), NFC (Near Field Communications), Wifi-direct, etc can be effectively used. For example, IBM Presence Zones, which is an intelligent micro-location based technology that provide deep insight to in-door consumer/user behavior can be used. Similarly the competitors like, Apple Inc's iBeacon, Google's Nearby, Gimbal's beacon etc offer various solutions for in-door establishments based on micro-location based technology.

Currently, there are no solutions which uses micro-location based technology for personalizing the audio-visual devices to listen/view programs. However there is a greater need and potential in combining both in IoT domain.

Following is an elaborate problem statement applicable to TV. Same holds good for others like, streaming devices, radios and car audios too.

Television (TV) is a telecommunication medium that is used for transmitting and receiving moving images and sound. A television channel is a physical or virtual channel over which a television station or television network is distributed. A television station is a type of broadcast station that broadcasts both audio and video to television receivers in a particular area.
