Abstract

The core idea is to include an option in editors and Integrated Development Environments (or, in any multi-document application) to close all related files in one go. A context-menu could be provided on a file to close all files having file-type as the current one. For example, on the title of a text file, an option could be provided to close all "text" files. On clicking on that option, all opened text files would get closed.

This text was extracted from a PDF file.
This is the abbreviated version, containing approximately 80% of the total text.

Closing all files of a file-type in an editor

In currently available editors and Integrated Development Environments, there is a way to have huge number of files in open state. At times, a user wants to close all files of a particular file-type. For example, a developer might want to close all XML files from the list of open files. The idea of this disclosure is to provide a way to close all related files in one go in a multi-document application.

A context-menu could be provided on a file to close all files having file-type as the current one. For example, on the title of a text file, an option could be provided to close all "text" files. On clicking on that option, all opened text files would get closed.

All editors maintain a list of open files, which can be utilized to implement this disclosure. A user is provided with a context menu on title bar of every file. The menu option is captioned "close all files having same extension". Once a user clicks on that context menu, the list of opened files is scanned for files having the same extension. All the files having the same extension are closed in one go.

Following diagram shows this implementation -
