Abstract

Currently instant messenger contacts can be sorted by name or availability. Sorting based on availability is primarily focused on currently online contacts. However there is no sorting mechanism for offline users based on their probable availability (becoming online).

Mechanism to sort offline contacts in an instant messaging system based on their earliest probable availability.

Proposed is a method for utilizing the analysis of the daily login time, time zone and official working hours of each instant messaging user to store an online availability data on the instant messaging server. Based on the historical data, the average daily login time of a given user would be considered as the next probable available time. If the user doesn't have any historical data for a given time zone, the official working hours would be used as input to calculate the next available time for that contact. The offline contacts would be sorted based on their next probable available time.


1. Instant messaging server would retrieve and store the current official working timings for every user along with the timezone info. The official working timings maybe specified by the user in the mail calendar or some centralized database, or by the organization. Similarly the holiday\leave\absence related data may be retrieved.

2. Instant messaging server would store the login time for every user and keep a history of this data over a period of time for every distinct timezone.

3. The historical data collected for a user may be discarded based on events like change of official work timings or change of role.

4. Instant messaging server would calculate the probable available time of every user based on their historical login data for the user's current timezone....
