Abstract

Swellable rubber element has been used on a packer for sealing off an annulus in a well After the packer with swellable element is deployed to position in the well water based or oil based actuation fluid is introduced to be in contact with swellable element causing the element to increase in volume in radial direction therefore seal off the annulus in between tubing and borehole or casing however such packer with swellable element is not conveniently retrievable from the well The swellable packer can be typically built with lengths from 3ft 30ft depending on differential pressure rating and packer element is self energized by reacting to well fluid This makes it difficult to design a conventional mechanical retrieval mechanism The improvement to make the Swellable packer retrievable is particularly advantageous in some applications In one multi zone horizontal well completion application Figure 1 multiple swellable packers are installed in conjunction with Inflow Control Devices ICD and screens The Flow Resistance Rating FFR of the ICDs are pre set on the surface to achieve a equalized production along the length of the well based on reservoir simulation but if the well is not producing as we expected or well experiences imbalanced production at different zones due to improper design wellbore hydraulics geology reasons etc it will be ideal to be able to adjust FRR of ICDs to make a more balanced production along the sections by retrieving the whole string out then deploy different quantities of ICDs and swell packers or ICDs with different FRRs to production zones Retrievable swellable packer will enable us to retrieve the whole string out to make FRR adjustment accordingly replace seal elements and damaged ICDs if any Customers want to have the retrieval ability in case they have any operational challenges after the packer is partially or fully swollen such as leaking packers rig broken down re space out etc There were a few occasions that swellable packers set prematurely before reaching to position due to unexpected reaction between well fluid and elements which led to whole completion string stuck in the well Retrievable swellable packer will completely eliminate the possibility of well plug due to swellable seal elements by retrieving the whole completion string out
