Abstract

A method for identiyfing tape subsystem attached to the mainframe and subsequently performing computational events is disclosed that comprises of a mainframe program that detects the underlying tape subsytem and upon identification provides a contextual, comprehenisve interface with alerting and analytics processing for the identified tape subsystem. The idea is to use a computer program to intelligently & automatically identify the underlying tape hardware system attached to the mainframe.The program code identifies the tape hardware & after detection, the method has an ability to perform multiple tasks for all major tape vendor subsystems using an interactive menu choices to perform multiple functions. Some of the functions include an ability for changing tape hardware configurations, producing tape stastical reporting, analytics and alerting on the raw data captured.

The method uses a computer program which intelligently & automatically identifies the underlying tape hardware system attached to the mainframe, giving a novel plug and play tape hardware detection technique. The program code using a computational method identifies the tape hardware, upon detection of a particular tape hardware, creates a unique unified software Interactive interface with functional abilities for the identified system, the method has an ability to perform multiple tasks for all major tape vendor subsystems. Depending upon the identified tape system currently associated with the mainframe, the user is provided with computational interface choices to perform multiple functions for the tape subsystem. Some of the functions include an ability for changing tape hardware configurations, producing tape statistical reporting, analytics and alerting on the raw data captured.

The approach addresses the need to provide a unified tape reporting mechanism for the host mainframe system & proposes to improve the current fragmented reporting methodology by providing a comprehensive, interactive, analytics and alerting mechanism.

The method and interface has the capability to intelligently recognize the tape hardware system attached to the Mainframe and taking into account generate an interactive unified console that can be utilized for tape reporting & analytic for the contextually chosen vendor. This method also acts as a single comprehensive interface to run tape reporting for environments which have multiple tape hardware systems. Capability to perform investigation and create email that cautions & addresses a noteworthy issue frequently confronted in different customer environments.

Overview of Proposed Approach :

The approach involves the below mentioned following points :
1) Use computer program which intelligently & automatically identifies the underlying tape hardware system attached to the mainframe giving a plug and play technique.
