Abstract

Article is about idea of involving virtual machines hypervisor to process of PVU counting. Hypervisor can once in a defined time create Licensing Snapshot of files on machine. Than it will send hashed or secured in other way Snapshot to company that manages customers licenses for counting process in cloud environment.

Method for subcapacity calculation in cloud

To properly verify how much PVU (Processor Value Unit) is used by software on customers machines there is need to install special agent that will perform hardware and software scan of machine. Unfortunately now it is necessary to have this agent installed. This situation generates many problems - from issues with installing that agent through proper configuration and ending with performance issues.

In this publication we propose solution that will eliminate those problems on virtual machines - not using any agents on machines and moving all weight of calculation to cloud.

The main idea is to involve virtual machines hypervisor to process of PVU counting. Hypervisor can once in a defined time create Licensing Snapshot of files on machine. Than it will send hashed or secured in other way Snapshot to company that manages customers licenses for counting process in cloud environment.

Such solution has many advantages - it eliminates problems with agents on customers machines, no hardware resources are used for agents, reduces to 0 performance issues when scan is running and also whole calculation process will be faster because cloud computing is much faster than conventional.

Each hypervisor manages many virtual machines. Our idea is to add funcionality to hypervisor, so it will be able to make Licensing Snapshot. Asset management is based on discovery of files, registries on machine. Whole process has been divided into 3Phases.

Phase 1 - Gathering Data

Snapshot will be just listing of all files and directories on machine. Than those Snaphots

will be sent to company that is managing licenses on customers machines. This is

Phase 1 - Gathering Data, shown on Drawing 1.
