Disclosed is a guide drone that guides a caver to safety/origination point during a return trip to the origination point.

The guide drone as disclosed herein includes a beeper, a compass, a microphone, a camera and a processor.

In an embodiment, on a forward trip, a caver goes into a cave with the guide drone. The guide drone create multiple virtual breadcrumbs at regular short intervals. A virtual

breadcrumb is a combination of acoustic signatures of the environment and a picture. The guide drone tracks speed and direction at the virtual breadcrumb. In an embodiment, the caver may turn off creation of virtual breadcrumbs if the caver wants to explore a short branch. Thus, enabling the guide drone to only save a direct path out.

Once, the caver wishes to track back, the caver releases the guide drone and follows it. The guide drone flies from one virtual breadcrumb to another virtual breadcrumb to find the way out of the cave in reverse order as when the guide drone entered the cave.

In another embodiment, a caver goes into a cave with a bag of virtual breadcrumbs. These virtual breadcrumbs have a radio beeper and sensor that detects when the guide drone is in close proximity. The virtual breadcrumbs light up when the guide drone is close. Accordingly, on a forward trip, the caver drops the virtual breadcrumbs as the caver moves through the cave.
