The invention relates to marine oil and gas piping and in particular to a monitoring system for integrity of the pressure sheath inside an end fitting for flexible pipes and risers The invention discloses system apparatus and method for monitoring integrity of pressure sheath within marine flexible pipe end fittings The axial and radial displacements are monitored using sensors attached to the inner collar The axial displacement is monitored using a rolling transducer which is kept in contact with the pressure sheath in such way that any axial displacement into the pressure sheath induces a rotation on the rolling element The radial displacement is monitored with a linear variable differential transformer LVDT affixed above the rolling transducer The invention allows continuous monitoring of the pressure sheath inside a full scale end fitting for both test and field applications without need for depressurization of the system

BACKGROUND

The invention relates to marine oil and gas piping, and in particular to a monitoring system for integrity of the pressure sheath inside an end fitting for flexible pipes and risers. The end-fitting constitutes the transition between the flexible pipe system and interfacing topside facilities, including floating production, storage and offloading vessel or platform, wellheads etc. or at the other end, to other subsea installations or piping. Each layer of the flexible pipe, including polymer layers such as the pressure sheath is mechanically terminated within the end-fitting in a way that it maintains fluid-tight seal under the specified design and operational conditions. The invention presents a method of monitoring the integrity of the pressure sheath inside the end fitting through determination of any positional change in that layer with respect to the remainder of the end fitting. It is a critical region to be monitored since the polymer may also have a failure mode based on the volumetric changes and cyclic loading history over its service life.
