Abstract

BACKGROUND

The invention relates to an apparatus for preventing salt build-up on valves in the splash zone or periodically submerged vent valves. Flexible pipe vent valves may be exposed periodically to seawater, after which the valves may dry in air leaving a salt residue to build up over time on the external surfaces of the valve. This salt buildup on the valve components and sealing surfaces can cause failure or malfunction of the valves, and also can act as a salt bridge providing electrical continuity between subsea cathodic protection systems and parts of the valve which are intended to be electrically isolated. Therefore, there is a need for a solution to prevent the exposure of pipe vent valves to water ingress. The invention presents apparatus for preventing salt build up on periodically submerged flexible pipe vent valves.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

The invention proposes design changes to the outlet of the vent valve housing by ensuring that the outlet always faces downwards into the water, to prevent water ingress into the valve. In one example of the design, a snorkel type arrangement is fitted to the outlet of the vent valve housing as shown in FIG.1. The snorkel type arrangement ensures that the exit of the tube always points downwards. A float valve is provided to prevent water entry into the snorkel arrangement leading to the vent valve. The tube end is flared to create a seating and a cage fitted around the exit of the tube comprising a float of suitable shape to mate with the tube exit seating and restrain the float from moving out of engagement with the seating. In another example, when the vent valve is already downward facing, the float valve is provided below the outlet as shown in FIG.
