The invention relates to a system for monitoring and protection of centrifugal compressor internals from liquid ingestion The monitoring system uses variation of differential pressure measured at locations along the condensate drain pipe of the compressor to detect liquid The system may trigger an alarm or actuate a valve for discharging the liquid accumulated within the drain pipe at a suitable threshold level of differential pressure depending on the rate of accumulation of condensate and the level of protection desired The system identifies condensate accumulation effectively thereby protecting the compressor from liquid ingestion

BACKGROUND

This invention relates to system for monitoring and protection of centrifugal compressor internals from process liquid ingestion. The centrifugal compressor normally utilizes gas processed in gaseous phase that in some case can transport some quantity of liquid. The liquid can be generated by process issues, or could accumulate within the compressor due to malfunctioning of the liquid/vapor separator. Water accumulation in the compressor may cause severe damage by mechanisms such as corrosion of parts, rust generation, seizure of parts , or excessive drive torque in case of high liquid levels. Despite using liquid separators and scrubbers, water within the compressor is a problem that needs to be addressed.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

The present invention is directed towards a system for monitoring and protection of centrifugal compressor internal components from liquid ingestion. Referring to FIG. 1, a centrifugal compressor is shown with inlet and outlet and condensate drain pipe. The invention uses differential pressure measurement at locations along the drain pipe to detect liquid. The pressure difference between the locations may be determined using a differential pressure transmitter (DPT) and monitored continuously to detect condensate accumulation. The locations where the pressure connection is drawn may be optimally selected to be sensitive to the condensate build up expected within the compressor.
