Abstract

In robotics machining applications tools that are to be mounted on the robots are generally required to be drawn first to calculate robot paths and perform collision checks Normally tools are drawn based on predefined templates with which users need only to enter some specific dimensions Since it is impossible to add a template for every kind of tools users are restricted to a limited amount of tools during tool creating This solution provides users a method to create a set of customized tools without being restricted by the predefined templates One feature of this solution consists of two parts a drawing pane and a property area Another feature of this solution is that capturing the form of a real object using a camera for generating a tool For individual users this solution can save a great number of time costs when creating customized tool sets It also allows the users to create user defined tools without being restricted to select from a predefined tool template database For industries this solution brings more proper calculation methods with more accurate models which will greatly reduce error rates

In robotics machining applications, tools that are to be mounted on the robots are generally required to be drawn first to calculate robot paths and perform collision checks.

Normally, tools are drawn based on predefined templates with which users need only to enter some specific dimensions, as shown in the following figure. Since it is impossible to add a template for every kind of tools, users are restricted to a limited amount of tools during tool creating.

Product Features

This solution provides users a method to create a set of customized tools without being restricted by the predefined templates.

One feature of this solution consists of two parts: a drawing pane and a property area, as shown in the following figure.

The pane is used for drawing desired tools by using NURBs or natural splines. In the property area, coordinates and angles of each joint point connecting other points can be adjusted.

To create a tool, users can draw lines at one side of the drawing pane from the center line or add coordinates in the Tool Properties area directly, as shown in the following figure. The coordinates added in the property area can be modified later by dragging the points in the drawing pane or setting new coordinates in the area.
