SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR COMPACT SYSTEM INTEGRATION FOR POSITRON EMISSION TOMOGRAPHY/COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY (PET/CT) SYSTEM

BACKGROUND

The present invention relates generally to a positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) system and more particularly to a technique for integrating a PET gantry, a CT gantry and a patient table in a PET/CT system.

Generally, a positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) medical imaging system includes a PET imaging gantry, a CT imaging gantry and a patient table. The PET/CT system combines both the PET imaging gantry and the CT imaging gantry in a single gantry. Conventional PET/CT system includes a separate base or a guide rail for mounting the PET gantry, CT gantry and the patient table. However, alignment of the PET/CT system requires lot of time.

It would be desirable to have an improved technique to provide alignment of the PET/CT system.

 

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS

Figure 1 depicts a positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) system with an integrated PET gantry, CT gantry and a patient table.

Figure 2 depicts the PET/CT system described herein with the patient table positioned to provide required velocity to cradle for CT scan.

Figure 3 depicts the PET/CT system described herein with the patient table moved back to create service space for PET gantry servicing.

Figure 4 depicts the PET/CT system described herein with the patient table and the CT gantry moved back and the PET gantry moved to create service space for CT gantry servicing.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

A technique for integrating a positron emission tomography (PET) gantry, a computed tomography (CT) gantry and a patient table in a PET/CT system is disclosed. The PET/CT system has subsystems including a common guide rail, PET gantry, CT gantry and the patient table. The CT gantry, PET gantry and the patient table are mounted on the common guide rail. The PET gantry is positioned in front, typically, between CT gantry and the patient table. The subsystems can move with respect to each other to position PET and CT gantries to carry out PET and CT scan respectively, and to create service gap to service the subsystems.
