This enhancement is accomplished through the addition of a secondary attenuating piezoelectic element into typical transducer designs.

Description:

This invention is an enhancement to the concept of ultrasonic acoustic transducers used
in downhole tools today. Typical ultrasonic acoustic transducers are comprised of a piezoelectric element, backing material, electrodes and an outer casing at minimum. This invention adds a secondary piezoelectric element on the opposite side of the backing material from the primary piezoelectric element. This secondary piezoelectric element can be actuated so as to produce a destructive signal which cancels any acoustic wave traveling through the backing material. This would include acoustic waves generated by the primary piezoelectric element or unwanted high frequency ambient noise. Attenuation of the signal coming from the primary piezoelectric element into the backing material is crucial to insure the sensory function of the transducer is not corrupted. Figure 2 shows a section view of a generic ultrasonic acoustic transducer with the additional secondary attenuating piezoelectric element.
