Abstract

A method and apparatus for estimating a vehicle wheel assembly orientation using tire tread depth measurement data acquired from a tire tread as the vehicle wheel assembly rolls over or is observed by a sensor in a tread depth measurement system The sensor observes a surface region of the rolling wheel assembly tire tread and acquires tread depth measurement data for numerous data points within the observed region The acquired tread depth measurement data is utilized by a processing system to generate a representation of the observed region on the tire tread surface which is then evaluated to identify one or more features having correspondence to an orientation of the vehicle wheel assembly The orientation of the vehicle wheel assembly relative to the sensor is determined by the processing system from the identified features of the tire tread surface and the results are either reported to an operator or utilized in subsequent vehicle evaluations

ABSTRACT

  A method and apparatus for estimating a vehicle wheel assembly orientation using tire tread depth measurement data acquired from a tire tread as the vehicle wheel assembly rolls over, or is observed by, a sensor in a tread depth measurement system. The sensor observes a surface region of the rolling wheel assembly tire tread, and acquires tread depth measurement data for numerous data points within the observed region. The acquired tread depth measurement data is utilized by a processing system to generate a representation of the observed region on the tire tread surface, which is then evaluated to identify one or more features having correspondence to an orientation of the vehicle wheel assembly. The orientation of the vehicle wheel assembly relative to the sensor is determined by the processing system from the identified features of the tire tread surface, and the results are either reported to an operator or utilized in subsequent vehicle evaluations.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

  The present disclosure is related to vehicle measurement or inspection systems, and in particular, to a vehicle inspection or measurement system configured to identify an orientation of a rolling vehicle wheel assembly utilizing tire tread depth data acquired by a drive-over optical tire tread depth measurement system from a region on the tread surface of the rolling vehicle wheel assembly.

  Systems for measuring vehicle properties, such as wheel alignment and associated parameters, are traditionally set up for obtaining measurements with a high degree of accuracy under controlled conditions, such as with the vehicle disposed at a stationary location on a level surface or alignment lift rack. These systems may require the temporary placement of various inclinometers or optical targets on the vehicle wheels, from which data is directly or indirectly acquired to determine the various alignment measurements. In general, vehicle wheel alignment measurement procedures require a technician to spend time preparing the vehicle for measurements, acquiring the measurements, and performing adjustments necessary to correct any identified problems.

   Often, a vehicle brought in to a shop for other services may unknowingly be in need of an alignment service as well. However, unless the service technician and the vehicle owner are willing to spend the time required to prepare the vehicle for measurement and proceed with an

alignment measurement process, alignment issues will likely remain undetected and unrepaired.
