Spray application bottles are common packaging for many consumer goods. The spray application bottles utilize a variety of different dispersal systems such as pump action, aerosol, or pressurized spray. The directions for using each product include a recommended spray range for the distance between the user and the application target . This ranges changes from product to product, and is dependent upon the type of spray system the packaging uses. All spray application devices have recommended/optimal ranges for best performance. This can be relatively short ranged, such as water proofing spray for your shoes, to a larger range such as paint sprayers.

The problem lies in the inaccuracy of a human trying to spray at the recommended distance across the entire product . This is especially a problem if a spray product is clear or otherwise difficult to see. A system is needed to ensure that users have complete and uniform coverage of the target spray item.

The novel contribution is a system that projects from the spray device the maximum, minimum, and ideal spray ranges based upon the type of product and nozzle on the spray device. The core idea is to use an overlay of a visual range field to provide the user

with a visual reference for the recommended spray distance for optimal coverage. The overlay provides information such as minimum distance, ideal distance, maximum distance, dispersal pattern, and spray coverage. The user receives this information through a wearable augmented reality device.

To implement the novel system, the user enters the product information along with the type of sprayer (e.g., aerosol, pump, etc.) into the associated augmented reality system. The user can perform the entry via voice, scanning a Universal Product Code (UPC), etc. The augmented reality device projects an expected application field from the spray device, which allows the user to see the application field and thus the optimal position for the spray device . The application field might change color to indicate the optimal spray range; system can illuminate in red when the device is completely out of range, yellow when it is within range but not quite optimal, and green when it is within the optimal r...
