TECHNICAL FIELD

New hydraulic steering system of Azipod® propulsion system. New hydraulic steering system enables energy recycling and UPS function. Accumulators are used as energy storage for the energy recovery system.

BACKGROUND OF THE DISCLOSURE AND TECHNICAL PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED

Azipod® propulsion systems shown in figure 1 are steered with hydraulic or electric steering systems. Nowadays electric steering is usually preferred over hydraulic in open water applications. In ice-going ships hydraulic steering is used because of high load impacts which currently are a problem to electric steering system.

The current hydraulic steering system has no energy recovery options or hydraulic UPS functions as a standard. They have to be built on top of the system which increase the costs even more. It also has a high running noise.

Hydraulic power unit of the proposed new hydraulic steering system can be smaller (same components and same quantity but smaller) than of the current hydraulic steering system. Energy recycling is enabled and running noise is decreased when the new hydraulic steering system is used. UPS function is also gained using the accumulators as energy storage for the energy recovery system. UPS function is increasing operability of ship in case of losing electricity in emergency situations.

SUMMARY

New hydraulic steering system of Azipod® propulsion system is proposed. New hydraulic steering system enables energy recycling and UPS function. Accumulators are used as energy storage for the energy recovery system combined with common pressure rail - technology.
