Method and System for a Context Awareness Umbrella

    A person goes to the beach with its own beach umbrella. Depending on sun position during the day there is the need of adjusting the umbrella position to have a shadow area more or less in the same zone without the need of moving in different areas of the beach to follow the shadow projected by the umbrella.

    The present article describes a method and system for automatic orientation of a beach umbrella depending on sun position in order to maintain an almost constant shadow area. The idea is to leverage a mobile technology without any need of sensors installed directly on the umbrella.

    The basic architectural components of the solution are provided below: 1) A beach umbrella that is provided with an engine that is responsible to change the umbrella orientation. The umbrella is also equipped with RFID to receive the instructions on movement.

2) A mobile application that is able to use GPS positioning, compass orientation (North, South...) and sun movements for that specific date in order to calculate the proper umbrella trajectory to maintain the shadow area.


3) A server that provides the sun movements given the location, date and time.

    The basic flow is described below: 1) The user sets up the initial umbrella position to have the shadow area at his choice.

2) The user orients his mobile in the same direction and angle of the umbrella that are then used by the app.
