Analytics Visualization of User Email Activities in Corporate Networks

Understanding the email activities of users in an organization is important for a variety of tasks, including expertise location, finding unusual behaviors (i.e. threat detection), and determining patterns of activity for better understanding personal behavior and project evolution. As organizations and activities expand, analyzing and visualizing big data becomes more challenging.

The novel contribution is a system and method for visualizing this information in a succinct manner that enables visual overlay of analytics results.

The system and method provide a visualization of communication activities of a user comprising a summary of the communications into threads and a visualization of the threads on a circular timeline according to when the threads began . The system visually represents the other users involved in the communications as well as the analytics related to threads/communications/users. The visualization is based on a biological metaphor of a living cell. The system includes interaction and search (e.g. highlighting all communications containing search text) capabilities.

The key steps of the invention are to summarize the collection of a user's email activities into communication threads and then visualize said activities on a circular timeline that enables interactive drill-down.
