Abstract

This method provides a convenient and low-cost way to show a vehicle's front wheel direction with a mobile device containing gravity sensor. If this mobile device is tied on the steering wheel of a vehicle, the gravity sensor can detect the rotate angle of the steering wheel. Then the method calculates the front wheel direction with some initialized data, and shows the direction of the front wheel. This will help drivers to foresee the vehicle's moving direction, or put the front wheels in right place.

A new method to show the front wheel direction with mobile devices

Seeing the wheel direction is quit useful for divers. For instance, when parking or driving out of parking slot with multiple moves, drivers are easily be confused with the direction of front wheels. So they don't know how to turn the steering wheel, unless they move the car a little to see where it is heading.

Although there are existing methods to show front wheel direction, many vehicles do not have such a device, since they are are relatively expensive and complex.

Our idea provides a new method to show the front wheel direction with mobile devices. It does not depend on the existing expensive and complex equipment. And it could be used on most vehicles very easily.

This disclosure provides a convenient and low-cost method to show a vehicle's front wheel direction with a mobile device with gravity sensor. If this mobile device is tied on the steering wheel of a vehicle, it can detect the angle that the steering wheel is turned. Then it calculates the front wheel direction with some initialized data, and shows the direction of the front wheel. This will help drivers to foresee the vehicle's moving direction, or put the front wheels in right place.

This method provides a convenient and low-cost method to show a vehicle's front wheel direction. Using this method, the driver is able to detect any car's front wheels direction, if he has a mobile device with gravity sensor. Following is description of the method.

1. This method needs a program in the mobile device. The program could be an application, or any other forms that can run on the device, accessing the gravity sensor inside, and show pictures to the user. Figure 1 is one example of the mobile device showing front wheels direction on the screen.

2. This method also needs to attache the mobile device on the steering wheel. There are already many such methods, like, tie the device with a string, or stick it with double side stick tape, etc. Figure 2 shows that the mobile device screen must be in the same flat that the steering wheel moves. Figure 3-a, 3-b, 3-c, and 3-d show examples that where the mobile device is attached to the steering wheel. Figure 3-a, 3-b, and 3-c are better positions to choose. Figure 3-d represent random positions that the user might choose, which is also doable,

while the direction calculation and showing might be more complex.

3. This method requires a procedure to "train the device", thus the device knows how to relate the gravity sensor data with the front wheels direction. For example, if the mobile device is attached as Figure 3-a shows. And, it's assumed that the gravity sensor is right at the center of the steering wheel circle.
