Background

Today's vehicle seals can be fixed to a car body for example by using a tape. This kind of application may need a complex machinery for applying the seal to the car body, like for example a robot unit. Due to many different reasons, like for example place on a production side, decreasing volume of a car line etc. some OEMS are looking for ways to manually apply seals to a car body. Manual application methods using seals with mechanical fastening elements (like for example clips) are known as well.

Also known are solutions that provide a mechanical fastening element as well as a tape, e.g. one narrow strip of tape (hybrid seals). The fixing of these seal onto the car body is usually done manually, e.g. pre-fixation through the mechanical fastening elements and final fixation - adhering through the tape.

The following is a disclosure of a manual method of applying a hybrid seal to a car body, wherein the seal provides mechanical fastening elements as well as a tape as a fastening element (hybrid seal).

Seal Construction (hybrid seal)

The seal may provide a foot part with a concave shape. This foot part may be made out of a compact rubber with a shore hardness of for example > 50 sh A. The thickness of the foot part may be for example between 0.3 and 0.5 mm. On one side of the foot part the seal in the shape of a tubing may be provided. On the opposite side of the foot part, two narrow adhesive strips may be provided, one on each side of the food part. The adhesive strips may have a width of around 4 mm per strip and a thickness around 1.1 mm. As clip receiving area, the foot part may provide several holes. The holes in the foot part may be spaced with equal distances from each other or they may be spaced according to the application they are used in. That means that the clips are positioned where they are needed, i.e. where the car body the seal is applied

to provides receiving areas. The area around the hole in the foot part may also function as hinge to provide some flexibility in the foot part. The seal tubing above the foot part may also provide a hollow area that extends between the foot part and the seal tubing can be used for distribution of a vacuum as will be described in the following.

The clip of the hybrid seal provides a head that needs to be able to airtight close the hole in the foot part and a known clip mechanism that can be pushed into a receiving area of the body part of the car.
