Smart Out-of-Office Email Router


Current "Out-of-Office" email tools allow a sender to know when the recipient is unavailable, but do not assist the recipient in managing the incoming email. When an email user is out of the office due to vacations or any business travel , upon return, the email inbox has many unread messages. Reading all of the emails is time consuming. In addition, some of the topics and messages are no longer relevant and no longer require action from the user.

The novel contribution is an email-filtering management tool, or smart router, that is active when the "Out-of-Office" function is in use. This tool saves in the user's inbox only emails that require an action or immediate review by the recipient. The system saves the removed emails in an "Out-of-Office" folder. Upon returning to work, the user only sees the emails that require an action or a response in the inbox.

In a preferred embodiment, the user activates the out-of-office tool before leaving for a known period. The user sets up the normal functions per usual processes, but in this case also selects a secondary, backup person to receive all the emails during the absence period. This allows the backup person to solve any issue while the primary user is unavailable, and decreases the amount of emails the person has to review upon return to work.
