System and Method for Expense Filing Automation

Filing expense reports, either for personal or business expenses, is a tedious and manual job. A system is needed to incorporate automation into the process and thus decrease time spent on this task .

The novel contribution is a system and method to automate expense filing. The idea takes advantage of popular check-in applications (apps) and the associated Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), along with cognitive computing systems to automate most of the creation of expense reports, leaving to the user only the task of filling the expense value.

With this system, a text parsing/semantic analysis algorithm analyzes a user check-in in a third-party app to produce a categorized expense entry in the expenses report application. The user only has to input the value of that expense later. If the categorization is wrong, then the user corrects it and the result is fed back into the categorization system for machine learning .

To implement this system and method for expense filing automation in a preferred embodiment :

1. A user checks-in at a place using a common social check-in app 2. A cloud-based application periodically queries the user's check-in list via the check-in service API and gathers new check-ins information
3. The list of new check-ins is fed into a text-parsing/semantic analysis algorithm. This algorithm classifies the place by its
