Web-based Printer Language Translation with Virtual Printer Preview

Printers and media processing devices often operate on proprietary software languages. A first format for printing in a first brand of device may not be compatible with a second format for printing on a second brand of device. It may be desirable to have a system to translate formats between various printer languages.

Embodiments of the present invention provide a converter to translate a first printer language format to a second printer language format. The converter can operate remotely, outside of a printer, through a web interface. The converter may generate translated data and a rendered image to the user.

Embodiments may include a web interface that may enable a user to enter data to a remote server, either manually via text box or through a file upload in, for example, an HTML Form. Optionally, data may be entered programmatically via HTTP Post or other web service interface. The data may then be run through the appropriate Application Programming Language (APL) translation module - either user-selected or possibly auto- detected - and the output collected. The data may also run through the same APL module loaded in a virtual printer and the rendered image may be collected. Multiple APLs may be co-resident. The resultant translated data and image may then be returned to the user and either displayed on the web page, or processed by the requesting application in dependence of how the servi...
