Abstract

Balanced to unbalanced networks (balun) are a basic building block in RFICs, such as radio transceiver (for communication), imaging or RADAR. Typically, balun networks are limited to frequency band, while designing a distributed amplifier, or a wide band element such as a detector, a mixer or a multiplier, balun network may be the bandwidth bottleneck. Using prior art will provide limeted bandwidth and large area. This novel design includes a compact structure with wide frequency bandwidth, DC tap for the differential side and is easier for layout integration.

Balanced to unbalanced (balun) is a basic building block in RFICs, such as radio transceiver (for communication), imaging or RADAR.

Typically, baluns have narrow bandwidth behavior and present a bottleneck in performance.

Marchand baluns which present a relative wide frequency working band consists large chip area .

Transformer based baluns work properly up to around 0.5 of their self resonance frequency (SRF) which is limiting.

Designing a wide band differential circuit such as a distributed amplifier , multiplier, mixer or a detector demands

a wide band balun for either preparing the signal to the next stage or connecting the signal to a pad for measurement.

Using a narrow band balun may define the bandwidth of the circuits operation,

moreover, if the balun consists large chip area this directly costs money.

This disclosure uses the transformer configuration and the coil based Marchand Balun while the

Marchand implementation is done using only one transformer.

and with simple switching the transformer utilizes two different techniques of balanced to unbalanced circuits,

and by combining them we get a theoretically unlimited frequency band of balanced signal . Abstract:

      such as baluns due to their shorter wavelength. ³ Prior art:

² Marchand balun, lumped balun, transformer based balun

³ Improvements over prior art:

² Marchand balun has a relatively wide working band but occupies large chip area .

This design is much more compact, and achieves wider working bandwidth.

² Lumped balun has a narrow working band, DC path should be designed separately and consists at least 3 inductors while the suggested design consists the space of one inductor, presents significantly wider working band and consists a DC path.
