Abstract

Disclosed is a system to implement a policy guided service catalog that automatically configures the service offerings in the catalog by filtering and aggregating available services, taking into account existing policies, user workload, and user preferences, and then allowing the users to make the final selection among policy-sanctioned service offerings.

Policy Guided Service Catalog

A Cloud Service Broker for a hybrid information technology (IT) environment can have multiple service providers providing similar types of services. Specified policies can restrict specific types of service offerings to specific workloads. Users consume these services via service offerings in a catalog. The service offerings in the catalog need to be modified according to the policies in place and the workload that the user intends to process.

A method is needed to automatically adopt offerings in a Cloud Service Broker catalog based on the available service offerings from service providers, policies governing the service providers and associated service offerings, and the workload type the user intends to process using a service offering. In addition, the offerings in the catalog need to change accordingly if policies are updated, if the workload type changes, or if attributes of the service offerings for the Cloud Service Providers (CSPs) change.

The novel contribution is a system to implement a flexible Cloud Service Broker catalog. This policy guided service catalog automatically configures the current service offerings by filtering and aggregating available services and taking into account existing policies, user workload, and user preferences. The catalog then allows the user to make the final selection among policy-sanctioned service offerings.

The system integrates the Cloud Service Broker catalog with the policy engine and the service provider gateway. Each offering is parameterized by a service type or a composition of service types and applicable workload type. For selecting a service offering from the catalog, user first authenticates with the cataloging service. From user credentials, the cataloging service determines the service offerings to make available in the catalog to the user. It also determines the behavior of the service offering based on the available service choices, applicable policies, and other cloud broker constraints. F...
