ABSTRACT

A method is presented herein to quickly find all messages of the same topic and to send a message to related to that topic. The concept of a message thread, and its creation and management is introduced to manage all messages of the same topic. This methodology is simple to implement. It provides a convenient and productive user interface/user experience for an Instant Messaging user to manage and track all messages of the same topic.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

If there are numerous messages in an instant messaging chat group, the messages could be produced on multiple different topics. However, since all the messages are presented in time order and there is no clue of which topic each message is talking about, the user has no means to find all messages that are related to a specific topic. A method is presented herein to quickly find all messages related to a particular topic and to send a message related to that particular topic.

Reference is initially made to steps 10-11 graphically depicted below in Figure 1. In the method presented herein, a simple drag-and-drop is enough to create a new thread on a specific topic (Steps 1 ~ 4). When creating a new thread, a numeric thread ID is created by Instant Messaging (IM) application and it is read-only. The user can input topic and description for the thread. When a new thread is created, each message in the thread will be added a thread identifier (ID) on top it (Step 5).

Similarly, a drag-and-drop can add a message to an existing thread (Steps 5 ~ 6). The user can click thread ID on top of any threaded message to enter that thread (Steps 7 ~ 8), and click the "..." button in a thread to view thread information (Steps 8 ~ 9).

The user can add a new message in a thread (Step 10).

When the user clicks in a thread to return to a previous large chat group, the new messages added in the thread will be merged in the large chat group (Step 11). All messages in the large group are visible to all members in the group, regardless of whether it has been threaded or not.

Whenever a threading event happens, for example, a thread is created or a message is added into a thread, the event will be broadcast to all members in the group.
