Abstract

Embodiments are presented herein for utilizing a shelter for a drone (for protection against inclement weather, etc.) including the drone carrying the shelter with it as it flies, and deploying it as needed for safety and to recharge via solar, or the shelter configured as a bolt-on attachment to an existing drone perch. DETAILED DESCRIPTION

     Drones, during flight, may determine that the weather conditions are sub-par for continued flight (wind/rain) and they will need to seek shelter. These weather or environmental conditions may introduce peril or damage to an airborne unit. Drones, much like humans, need to seek shelter sometimes to avoid risk during autonomous operation.

    Presented herein is a method for a drone to carry a protective cover with it as it travels, and to dynamically deploy it as needed. Additionally, the cover could provide solar recharge to the drone, as well as serve as an enhanced radio antenna for communications. This cover could be a bolt-on addition to existing drone perches that are already deployed. A figure depicting such a protected cover or shelter is shown below.

    There are two possible embodiments of the shelter. The first is a bolt-on addition to an existing drone landing perch that provides a safe enclosure for the drone once the drone has landed. The second is a foldable shelter that is carried by the drone itself. Once the drone lands it deploys the shelter for protection.

    The enclosure itself could be provided on a drone service/landing platform that would be deployed once the drone instructs the platform that landing has been completed. Once the drone has landed and communicated to the platform that the landing was complete (and optionally the dimensions of the drone), the enclosure activates and covers the drone protecting it from the elements and providing security. Once protected, the drone can consume other services from the perch (power, data, etc.).
