Abstract

Disclosed is a method for displaying a caption on TV display, which is transcribed for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. To cancel a time delay between video (motion pictures) and manually transcribed text, this invention records video information into a hard disk drive, and performs chasing playback with such transcribed text so that it can be synchronized with the motion pictures.

Method for displaying captions for deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers

Disclosed is a method for displaying a caption on TV display, which is transcribed for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. To cancel a time delay between video (motion pictures) and manually transcribed text, this invention records video information into a hard disk drive, and performs chasing playback with such transcribed text so that it can be synchronized with the motion pictures.

The figure below shows how this invention works. Television Receiver receives analog/digital TV signal and generates video signals, audio signals, and teletext information. In case of live broadcasting, the transcribed text is slightly delayed in generation compared with video and audio signals. Video & Audio Recorder records video and audio signals, and playbacks them with a few minute time lag which is longer than the delay of text information. Audio-Text Matcher receives text information, and matches text strings with audio signals. This can be done by using existing speech recognition or word spotting technology. Audio-Text Matcher outputs text information when the text matches with audio signals. Therefore, Display & Speaker can show text captions synchronized with video and audio.
