Abstract

Abstract: Enterprise servers has a facility called “Live partition mobility ”, which allows user to migrate a running virtual machines(VM) with its applications from one physical server to another server without disrupting services. Live partition mobility(LPM) supported VM are useful for managing outages and make for high availability. To make the Virtual Machine LPM capable , server hardware configuration should satisfy several conditions like both source and destination hosts should be viable with respect to CPU arch, memory and both source and destination servers should be connected to same storage etc. Today's enterprise servers in data center are managed through cloud, several hundreds and thousands of VM are deployed on the multiple physical servers. It is painful for the cloud admin /data center admin to ensure all the VM in the cloud are LPM capable and at least one target host is ready for each virtual machine. It is important to have required environment for administrator to migrate in the case of outages. .

System and method of reporting high availability status of virtual systems in cloud

Proposed Solution

This document proposes a method that how VM and physical servers can be monitored in the data center or cloud and notify the administrator about VM live partition mobility capability and the level of high availability in terms of number of viable hosts available to migrate that VM, So that administrator can take corrective action for the VM which does not have any viable host or only single viable host in cloud infrastructure.

• Identify/Discover all the VM in the data center or cloud

• Identify VM that are not LPM capable

• Viable target host for each VM migration.

• Identify VM that are LPM capable and no viable host is ready in cloud to migrate

• Identify VM that are LPM capable and only one viable host ready in cloud to migrate

• identify VM that are LPM capable and has more than one viable host ready in cloud to migrate.

• Notify administrator about VM that are not LPM capable

• Notify administrator about VM that are not having at least one target host for migration.

• Integrate this external tool with Cloud Manager which will help administrator to view virtual machine high availability report at one place.

This method monitors all the VM in the data center or cloud automatically and validate LPM capability of all the VM. Notify the admin user if at least one target host is not ready for migration operation .
