Abstract

--- In Power servers , today we have a firmware solution to identify the incorrect plugging of the cables ( FSI, Clock,UPIC and SMP). But this solution has below listed disadvantage which we are trying to solve using our idea. --- Server / CEC has to be powered on --- Cable validation firmware is required , which will have firmware development , testing and maintenance costs --- The field engineer needs to analyze the error logs logged by the firmware and identify the cables which are wrongly plugged. --- After swapping the cables, field engineer needs to rerun the validation firmware, and cycle of identifying the wrongly plugged cables continues. --- A HMC is required for looking at the errorlogs and identifying the wrongly plugged cables. --- The firmware error log format and proposed solution may differ between the releases and hence field engineer needs to be aware of all different releases. --- The entire process of identifying the wrongly plugged cables and fixing it takes time and CEC may needs to be powered on multiple times in the field.

--- The idea here which we are proposing is to provide an external simple device for the system administrators (Product Engineers, Field Engineers and Service Engineers) which will help him identify the wrongly plugged in cables before powering on the CEC. It covers all possible cables (FSI, CLOCK, UPIC and SMP) This solution will --- Not required system/ CEC to be poweredon --- There is no need to a HMC and field engineer does not require to look at any error log to identify the wrongly plugged in cables --- The field engineer can swap the cables and the device will help him dynamically detect the mis-plugged cables. --- The external device is very simple and does not need and micro processor or any extra firmware . The power consumed by the external device is very less and is equal to the amount of power just required to perform circuit completion check. --- The solution is meant for power system servers which requires some negligible lines and connectors.

CORE IDEA:

      -- The idea is to have an self powered external device (Power required to just complete the circuit ) which will detect the wrongly plugged in cables on the board without the CEC being powered on . Each board which gets inter connected by a cables will have a dedicated connector/port , to which this external device will be connected. This device will check for the circuit completion on the board and will indicate those ports into which the cables have been wrongly plugged. The CE can swap the cables and this external device will dynamically detect for circuit completion.

ADVANTAGES:

     -- The System Administrator need not Power on the entire CEC of the Server, and there is no need for the Admin to wait for firmware cable validation to run and detect the wrongly plugged in cable

     -- The System Administrator need not worry about looking at the failure errorlog and look for those cables being calledout / requested for replacement / re-plugging

     -- The System Administrator can swap the cables and this external device can detect for circuit completion immediately, where as the firmware detection logic will be needed to be re-triggered by the System Administrator.

Below are details on the implementation.

This idea is applicable for the cables like SP, CLOCK and UPIC cables in the multi drawer Enterprise servers like Brazos. Each of this cable runs between the Control Node and the CEC node.
