There are frequent news reports related to vehicle accidents involving fire where the vehicle occupants lose their precious lives because the central locking system of the car fails and they are unable to open the car doors. Even in some other accident related cases, the injured occupants get trapped inside and their rescue has to wait till gas cutters arrive. In case of serious injuries, it delays the time in which the accident victims can be taken to hospital. Such accidents necessitate a simple, safe and reliable mechanism that can unlock the vehicle doors automatically and that such unlocked doors can be opened both from inside by vehicle occupants and outside by the rescuers. This paper describes a mechanism that can cut open the hook of the vehicle door lock in an emergency. As the door lock is operated through multiple mechanisms like external lock, inside car door lock, child lock, etc. a single mechanism is provided to unlock the car door in case of emergencies. The mechanism cuts open the hook on which the lock latches, thereby handles all the above mentioned and any other locking scenarios. The mechanism has no moving parts, motors, actuators, etc. The triggering of the mechanism is based on multiple inputs. These inputs can be broadly classified into two sets, one set of inputs from various sensors for collision detection, smoke sensor, fire sensor, etc. The second set is the input that the vehicle has stopped moving. The emergency lock hook cutter mechanism is triggered when both sets of inputs are present. The mechanism can also be triggered mechanically if required. The mechanism consists of a compressed spring fitted with a sharp and tough blade. The toughness of the blade material is higher than the hook material. As the compressed spring is releases, it forces the blade forward at great speed and the blade cuts the hook, thus the car door gets unlocked. The spring and cutter assembly is enclosed in a casing. The casing material is tougher than the blade. Hence the casing is not cut even if the blade gets misaligned in a severe accident. The mechanism is mounted in multiple sets, one for each door of the vehicle. So even if one side of vehicle is damaged, the mechanism on other side will still work.

In case every thing fails during a fire inside the car, the tin alloy stoppers will melt by themselves when their temperature reaches 200-250 C.
In that case, the mechanism will be automatically deployed and the door will open. This is still better than the current problem where the occupants are not able to escape the car at all in case of fires.
2.8 EMERGENCY DOOR LOCK OPENING MECHANISM - ALTERNATIVE
Instead of the spring mechanism, a small gun with the metal cutter mounted as bullet head can also be used. The gun will fire the bullet at a very high speed. But in that case, the bullet will need periodic replacement.
