Abstract

In the modern IT infrastructure, the transaction monitoring is becoming more and more important to get LIVE system status and quickly isolate the problem. But at current stage, it is difficult to promote the product of transaction monitoring and deploy them in the productive system of customer. According to the feedback from customer, one of the most important concern is the performance of transaction monitoring agent becomes unacceptable when the transaction rate reaches high. The key idea of invention is introducing an adaptive self-feedback system using the existed monitored results to adjust the correlating & info collection rule in order to reach the simplest info collection and reduce the system cost.

In the modern IT infrastructure, the transaction monitoring is becoming more and more important to get LIVE system status and quickly isolate the problem. But at current stage, it is difficult to promote the product of transaction monitoring and deploy them in the productive system of customer. The reason is that the agent is closely combined with the customer transaction because it needs to monitor every transaction, the system cost here becomes very sensitive. The customer concern about the performance a lot, the system cost is acceptable when the transaction rate is low, but it will become unacceptable when there is high rate transactions. And if there are some application developed by customer themselves, it needs code plug-in, and the performance risk will become high. In this case, enhance the agent performance is a high priority task for this technical and solution.

By investigation on the mechanism of transaction monitor agent, it is found there is redundancy in the info collection for correlating transactions. The reason of this is the correlating rule is fixed and intended to fulfill all real case. For example, The Web Application Server can connect to almost every other middleware, so we need to collect all the info needed by all correlating, but for a certain single customer transaction of Web Application Server, due to the atomicity, it always connect to one type.

According to this, the idea of invention is using the existed monitored results as a feedback to adjust the correlating & info collection rule in order to reach the simplest info collection and reduce the system cost.

By using this, the completed info collection and correlating rule will be made for a certain system, and is most feasible for it. There is little redundancy in the info collection so that the performance will be enhanced, and it can also provide a least set of info collection for monitor to those customer developed applications.

There are several transaction monitor products currently, and the mainly mechanisms of them are more or less the same. Generally speaking, it is like this:

(1) The agent collect the required info for correlating.

(2) Refer to the correlating rule, analyze the collected info and form the correlation.
(3) Format the monitor result.
