New Steering System for Coiled Tubing

ABSTRACT: A new Orienter Control Module (OCM) in development is designed to reduce the cost and complexity of steering with coiled tubing. The OCM can be used with standard BHA components and is connected to the top of the orienter as shown in the figure.

DESCRIPTION: The OCM contains an internal high pressure pump to provide directional control, a microcontroller to regulate the pump, and a battery pack to power the microcontroller.  The battery pack can be replaced by a fluid-powered alternator for extended use. The OCM and orienter can be used for directional control without affecting MWD by using an equalizing sub and vent port to divert pressure and flow away from the MWD tool and prevent signal loss.

The OCM can upload telemetry information during drilling via fiber optics, acoustics, wireline, or pressure pulses. Similarly, the same means can be used to communicate changes to the originally planned trajectory.

Further operating flexibility can be provided by connecting the OCM and BHA to a remote open-close devices or to a downhole powered stroke module to control the bit without surface movement, an extremely useful option on floaters or to control WOB/ROP when milling windows.  The powered stroke module can use pressurized fluids, battery power or a spring.

The OCM provides a versatile, time-saving, cost-effective approach to steering with coiled tubing.
