TECHNICAL FIELD

    The invention is related to gas turbine aircraft engines. Specifically, the invention is related to a method for insulating engine casing and hot components to protect temperature sensitive components within the core compartment.

BACKGROUND

     The highest temperatures in turbofan engines are typically found in the combustor and the turbine section. The continuing demand for larger and more efficient turbofan engines creates a requirement for increased turbine operating temperatures. However, as the combustor and turbine hot gas temperatures have been increased to achieve increased output and thermal efficiencies, the challenge to maintain control and accessory component lives, due to the metallurgical limitations of critical hot components has also increased. For example, the core compartment includes pipes, valves, electric cables, valves, and actuators among other components which are temperature sensitive. These components need to be kept within a certain temperature interval in order to operate safely. The highest heat load in core compartments result from the engine case and pipes originating from higher compressor stages.

     There are a few ways in which temperature in the core compartment is currently controlled. Conventional turbojet propulsion systems include a core compartment cooling system which bleeds cooling air from the air cycle of the propulsion system. Because this cooling air bypasses the core engine and fan duct, where thrust is generated , it detracts from the efficiency and performance of the propulsion system.

    Another method to control the core compartment temperature in an effort to use less cooling air from the propulsion system is wrapping the engine casing and hot pipes with insulation. Thermal systems design engineers prefer to use thermal insulation so that the surface temperatures are lower and less ventilation air is needed. However, traditional insulation materials are bulky and heavy, increasing the engine weight and increasing fuel consumption. Furthermore, the core compartments of recent engines are very crowded, making the installation of insulation material difficult.
