Abstract

Disclosed is a method and device for simultaneously monitoring a data center environment and hardware failure. The method and device monitors data center environment to track failure rate of IT hardware such as servers, hard drives, and power supplies and correlates the hardware failure to environmental conditions for providing recommendations on modifying the environment data to avoid future failures.

A method and device is disclosed for simultaneously monitoring a data center

environment and hardware failure. The method and device monitors data center environment to track failure rate of IT hardware such as servers, hard drives, and power supplies and correlates the hardware failure rate with environmental conditions for providing recommendations on modifying the environment data to avoid future failures.

Fig. 1 illustrates a device used to monitor temperature, humidity and particulate and gaseous contamination in the data center.

As illustrated in fig 1, the device mounted to an electronic rack includes three push buttons represented in a yellow, green and blue color and used to track hardware failures in the data center. The device also includes a small fan based chamber for dust collection and reactive copper and silver coupons for tracking correction rate of hardware failures. Further, the device includes a USB based data logger for tracking temperature and RH% of the data center. Additionally, the device receives a trend of hardware failure rates and environmental behavior such as temperature, RH and corrosion rates over a specific period of time. Moreover, the device can be used in predictive analytics specific to the data center based on trending data and early warning system.

In accordance with a first embodiment, the device is a USB based device which includes a USB plug, temperature and RH sensors, a fan, rechargeable batteries, on-board memory and a removable card with corrosion monitoring devices as illustrated in fig 2.

As illustrated in fig 2, a set of user operable buttons represented in green, yellow and blue color are used to track the failure of hardware upon servicing the IT equipment. Here, the buttons used in the device can be customized depending on the type of rack of IT equipment.
