The bit depth resp. ROP measurement are one of the most important drilling information, since it's used to reference all other drilling measurements. This idea describes a method to measure the bit depth and ROP downhole close to the bit. When the bit depth and ROP are measured on the surface by measuring the length of the drill string, there are several uncertainties which make the measurement inaccurate. For example the deformation of the drill string (due to loads) and the temperature influences. Furthermore, the current methods may not allow an automating of a drilling process which needs down hole bit depth or ROP information. This idea overcomes the mentioned difficulties. The idea is to measure the rotation of a sleeve (or any other similar part, which fulfills this function) which is rotary decoupled from a drill string by e.g. mud bearings. A Steerable Stabilizer of a Steering Unit is such an example. This stabilizer sleeve contains three hydraulically actuated steering pads, which counteract to the formation to push the bit in the desired direction.
