Abstract

Collaboration solutions often combine email and chat technologies into a single experience. One benefit of doing this is to enable chat status awareness within views designed for handling email. A user reading an email can immediately see if someone is online and quickly initiate a chat discussion. Chat technologies often enable chat parties to be organised into Groups, and, these Groups can be based on user registry groups which can also be used to address emails. This article describes an extension to this integration which enables user actions on existing emails within an email client to exploit chat party/group information for quickly addressing emails. The act of dragging an email onto a chat party or group (or vice versa) is used to trigger the creation of a forwarding email ready for completion and sending to the party or group.

Chat technologies often enable chat parties to be organised into Groups, and these Groups can be based on user registry groups which can also be used to address emails. What is missing is the ability for someone working in an email client to make use of chat parties and groups for quickly addressing emails within the context of existing emails.

This idea enables user actions on existing emails within an email client to exploit chat party/group information for quickly addressing emails. The act of dragging an email onto a chat party or group (or vice versa) is used to trigger the creation of a forwarding email ready for completion and sending to the party or group.

The main advantages to this are:

Better user experience due to fewer user interactions (clicks and keyboard presses) required to forward emails.


Chat status awareness can more easily be used in the forwarding decision process.

The diagram below illustrates the basic concepts of the invention. In this example, a user would like to forward an email to a group, where that group is defined in a chat client.
