Abstract

On CUV's and SUV's today there is no place to store fragile items especially when there are other items that are stored on the load floor in the luggage compartment. The net systems provided in most SUV's are typically on the load floor and they offer no separation from other cargo that might damage cargo in the net. There is no option for storage above the load floor that can also keep cargo relatively dirt free. There is also need to have storage hidden from outside eyes by use of a package tray as in today's Focus vehicle Figure 2. The Focus vehicle today has a package tray that lifts up at an angle with a pivot point at the front of the package tray Figure 3. Developing a hidden net shelf system would create a place to transport, and store fragile items above other items inside the rear of vehicle. The shelf will also keep specific items relatively dirt free especially when carrying dirty items on the load floor. Net can be easily removed when not in use or larger items are transported, thus not hindering cargo space. Method The hidden net shelf is made of nylon net material with rigid nylon fabric corners Figure 4 that creates a tray type shelf. The tray will help prevent items from falling off and also giving a rigid appearance. The net is a nylon mesh and the size of the net holes is designed to pick up the smallest item that customers would probably store in this shelf. Netting can expand like a hammock to help retain objects. This is shown in the Figure 5. The shelf can also be made of nylon fabric without holes to prevent smaller items from falling through or getting caught in netting. The edges of the net have loops (Figure 4) that will attach to the hook on the body trim panels of the vehicle as shown in Figure 1. The loops from the net are shown in Figure 4 and are designed to transmit the load of the cargo shelf to the hook on plastic package tray trim piece which in turn is attached to the bodyside sheet metal. The hook is designed to allow easy assembly and disassembly There are labels added to the net to show the customer the direction of attachment and the max load that can be held on this shelf. Conclusion The Hidden under cargo cover would provide storage in the least utilized area of the vehicle as shown in Figure 5. The shelf will present itself when the liftgate is opened and the package tray figure 3 is lifted up along its pivot point by cords attached from the liftgate to the rear of the package tray. This provides the appearance of a hidden additional package shelf that can be disassembled and stored easily.
