A System to Utilize Pattern Streams to Influence Activity

The authors of blogs, forums, wikis, etc., often repeat previously released knowledge. In the process of repeating this knowledge, it is also possible that the authors make slight changes (either intentionally or inadvertently), creating duplicate information with varied data. This not only pollutes the activity stream that a user establishes to follow content and engage with other similar users, but also creates the possibility of the propagation of false information. Additionally, a user may start to unknowingly give weight to incorrect sources of information simply because it was the first to report some type of news (e.g., Source A reports news A, the user believes news A though Source B posted a more accurate article two hours later).

With the amount of information being created each day, a system is needed by which to optimize the presented information to prevent data overload on the user and ensure greater content reliability.

The novel contribution is a system that examines a pattern of knowledge distribution and, over time, ascertains the origins of information obtained by a user, and then utilizes that pattern to influence an activity stream.

An example of a knowledge distribution pattern is: WriterA usually tweets about new functionality in topicA; PosterB usually is the first to get information on topicB; UserC can say for topicA and topicB that…

By mapping the origin and accuracy of content posted by writers/posters/users over time, the novel system creates an optimized activity stream that allows an end user to receive trusted/verified information and authors with which to engage.

The system actively monitors released content, tracks the sources of content, and then produces pattern maps. The author uses these maps to influence and enable future activity streams or interactions with the original poster and other similar users. In addition, the users of this functionality can build original/individual content based on the information learned from the existing peers. The...
